Apple mistakenly released this season’s fourth episode of Stargate: Atlantis, instead of the season premiere via it’s iTunes Store. Apparently, the confusion was caused by episode production and broadcast numbers. Broadcast numbers represent the episodes in the order in which they are to be broadcast and production numbers represent them in the order they were filmed. Apparently, the fourth episode of the fourth season was labeled by its production number - 401 because it was the first episode actually filmed.
The mistake was not caught for 24 hours. Naturally, the leaked episode is all over the internet already.
Apple should have definitely been more careful, but conversely, maybe MGM shouldn’t have even had future episodes accessible to Apple so early.
These are the kinds of issues that production and distribution issues that companies will have to be extremely cautious of as media distribution goes digital.
