Check out this list of portable applications over at Wikipedia. It is a terrific resource of various tools and utilities that let you browse the web (Yeah, Firefox!), manipulate images (Gimp rocks) and watch DVDs and video files (Media Player Classic makes the day go by!).
These are awesome programs that will run nicely from your USB thumb drive with no installation required - for those times when installing a program is just not possible.
Many of these applications have become absolutely essential to me. Browse the list. I bet you’ll be surprised how much you find.

Check out Portable VLC for media. VLC is one of my fave media players and they just released the portable version recently.

Shaun: You just got a sweet laptop. I am sure that will occupy you for quite some time.
The thumb drives to come in very handy though!
David: I’ll try it out for sure. I have used the Linux version regularly in the past. Never tried the Windows version. I have been using Media Player Classic, but am always open to alternatives. Thanks for the heads up!
