I have been a big fan of the Trillian instant messaging client for several years. It is one of the few pieces of software that I actually like enough to purchase. I recently signed up for Gmail and use it to chat with some friends and co-workers. Google uses the Jabber/XMPP protocol for its instant messaging. As a result, you can use Trillian to communicate with your friends that use Google Talk. You need to download this zip file. Extract the files to C:\Program Files\Trillian (or wherever you installed Trillian), and overwrite any existing files when prompted. Then go into your Connection Manager and add a new Jabber account. Just use your Gmail/Google Talk credentials and you should be all set. I did this last night and it works great.
Trillian is an excellent application for communicating with friends among multiple IM networks. Though there has been some concern lately on the Trillian message boards regarding the lack of new updates, I have had no real problems and will continue using it as long as it gets the job done.
However, if you want an open-source alternative, I have heard many good things about Miranda. I need to check it out!

I would just be glad if you would log onto your IM every now and then…
LOL
I also love Trillian. I use it religiously on the desktop, laptop, at work, etc. I also have integrated the jabber plugin and I enjoy not having to run multiple IM clients.

Listen here! I was on last night and the night before. Just because you’re not on the same 10 minutes I am doesn’t mean I wasn’t online
Seriously though, I do need to remember to run it more often!

I think you are getting old like me. I go home from work planning on spending time with the kids until bedtime and then playing a game for a while. You know, I used to stay up til 2:00am or even 3:00am. But now, when 11:30pm rolls around, I hit the sack. It happens to the best of us…
